Tuition and Costs

Public law school tuition and fees can be $6,000–$13,000 a year while private school tuition and fees are $26,000–$37,000 a year. Find ways to pay for that law degree.

Law school costs generally include tuition and fees, room and board, and books. Like undergraduate expenses, these costs may vary between public and private schools.

Additional fees to keep in mind:

  • LSAT fee: $115 (late registrants pay an additional $58)
  • Law school application fee: $35–$65
  • Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) subscription fee: $106
  • Bar exam expenses: $600–$900 (registration, course review, hotel, and transportation)
  • Room and board expenses will vary depending on your location. (Student budgets are adjusted to accommodate for local costs.)
  • Book costs vary by school and curriculum. Plan for $500–$1,500 a year.

Financial Aid Options
Finance your graduate school education with a Sallie Mae® loan program.

Federal loans are often the cheapest way to borrow. Our federal loans—which include Stafford and Perkins loans—are guaranteed by the U.S. government under the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).

When federal loans are not enough to cover your education expenses, consider a private loan to bridge the funding gap.
